My high schools 50th anniversary was this past weekend; The Coronado Dons of Scottsdale. As an alumnusDonette we dusted off our red velvet capes to twirl once again on the field of green.

We had been practicing our dance for weeks – and now it was the big day.  We would perform in front of a huge crowd on the football field as we had 36 years ago.

It was a warm 103 out; an early evening, all 16 of us lined up in front of the band donning our red capes so proudly.  As I am waiting at attention for the band director to give us the signal, many thought s run through my mind; the 5:30 a.m practices, walking to school in the dark to get there on time.  The many hours of practice that only led to an awesome performance every time.  The thrill of it all was coming back.

SHOWTIME!

I hold on to my cape with the grip of a sailor.  The drums start to tap – my mind and body are in sync. We marched on to the field with such awesome grace and distinction.  We bow to the audience with the confidence that exudes from all of us.  The directors arms go up, the fanfare begins.  I get chills and feel tears begin to form.  The memories of being on this field week after week come flooding back.

The long-awaited fight song begins – Our capes are twirling, our legs are kicking; it was if it were yesterday.  As the music ended, we flipped our capes with attitude.  We weer on top of the world.  The smiles were beaming from all of our beautiful faces.

As quickly as it began it was over.

With pride and confidence we marched off the field.  A moment in time that will be imprinted in my memory forever.  Our time after of reminiscing and laughter just added to the new memories I will cherish forever!
